05 Kawasaki 636 Ignition Wiring Diagram

  1. I am removing my ignition key on my 00 zx6r. Has anyone done this before and if so do you know which wire to do what with? This will save me the time of trying to figure it out. I don't have a wiring diagram yet. Any info would help. Also where, what kind or how to intall a switch. Thanks.
  2. turn it to the off position and the key should slide right out :D
  3. key switch

OK. OK. I am removing the entire key housing on my 00 zx6r. Anyone know anything to help out. How to? Also is this legal for SUPERSTOCK? It doesn't specifically say anything in the rulebook.

  4. Email me and I will instruct you on the specifics, young grasshopper.
  5. WERA74,

Would you be so kind as to share the same information with me for my '95 ZX-6R.

    Thanks,

  6. When I bought my Bandit off you I thought you were mechanically inclined Tim? Haha

How's the new shop? Another thing you and WERA74 have in common.

  7. What up, dog?

The new store is working out great, drop by next time you get a chance. Maybe you can help me figure out the wiring on my ZX-6R!

  8. I have personally never done it, But I do know there is a diode in the ignition switch ( available at Radio Shack, And keep spares just in case)

The Black box must read that there is the diode in line or else it won't send any juice to the coils when you start the bike.

Look at the wiring diagram and the switch to determine were to put the diode.

  9. The "diode" isnt in the wiring diagram. Also, its a 100 ohm resistor, not a diode....
  10. Thanks for clarifing the neccesary item our poster needed to know.
The wiring diagram should inform what contacts are being made to what wires when the key is turned on. This will help when removing the stock ignition and wiring in a switch so you get power where needed. If no one else provides any other helpful information, you may have to open the ignition switch to see what wire has the "resistor" ( could have sworn it was a diode, oh well) inline.
  11. Thanks guys,
I figured there must be some kind of "anti-hotwire" design that was not shown on the schematic, but I didn't know where it was. I'll get it figured out today and let you know.

    Tim

  12. Got it!

Yup, there is a resistor thingie in the switch inline with the grey wire (I'm going to Radio Shack this evening to have it identified and pick up a spare). The blue wire and red wire are not used. Basically, 12v current comes in thru the white wire and goes out to the brown wire and grey wire. In my set-up, I ran the white wire to a single pole automotive (30amp?) on-off switch, then from the switch to both the white wire and the grey wire - resistor - grey wire. This way you still have your handlebar kill switch working, plus you have another on-off switch to interrupt the power supply and prevent battery drain. My bike already had the kickstand switch, clutch switch, and neutral indicator light removed, if that matters.
Thanks to you smart guys that knew about the resistor thing in the switch, I never would have thought to look there.

  13. Why not wire the kill switch to turn the bike on and off? Hitting the kill switch will still kill the power. It sure makes the wiring simpler and there are less switches to worry about.

  14. Scott,

The handlebar kill switch only interrupts one circuit going to the ignitor box, it doesn't interrupt all the sources of current drain (I killed my battery several times before I put the switch inline).

  15. I think what he's sugesting is rewiring the kill switch to be the main power on off. It'll still work as a kill switch as we require and have the added bonus of turning off all power. A lot of SS bikes are done this way.
  16. sounds great

    Hey mongo,

Sounds great, now how do you do that?

    :D

  17. One of my other racebikes is set-up with the handlebar switch as the only power cut-off, and you can certainly do that, but I have found that it is much more easily (accidently) flipped and left on, draining the battery. I usually discover this as I hear "third and final call" over the PA! But it does make for a cleaner, less cluttered cockpit. And of course, with 2 switches you have to remember to turn the main one off, or you're still screwed.
Thanks again everyone for your input.
    Tim
  18. one switch

Tim, I would like to set my bike up to just use the handlebar mounted switch. I have an extra battery anyway so I'll take my chances. Could you tell me how to do it that way?

  19. Here is an article I wrote on how to do this on a 2000 GSX-R750. Suzuki uses the 100 Ohm resister deal too. Obviously the article won't be a step by step guide for your bike. But it should give a very good idea of how to do it.

  20. Worked great on my '03, thanks a bunch!
